KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Royals continue to stockpile options in the middle of the diamond. They just claimed Tug Hulett off waivers from Seattle. The 25-year old is a left-handed hitting middle infielder.
Hulett made it to the Majors last season. He hit .224 with a home run and two RBI in 30 games. He put up solid numbers in the minor leagues. He hit .298 with 14 home runs and 47 RBI in 91 games with Tacoma (AAA) last year.
Hulett was originally a 14th round selection of the Texas Rangers in 2004. He has led the league in walks twice and stolen 15 or more bases four separate times in the minors. The Rangers traded Hulett to the Mariners for Ben Broussard on December 12, 2007.
Tug's actual name is Timothy Craig Hulett, Jr. His father is former Major League infielder Tim Hulett. The elder Hulett played 12 seasons with the White Sox, Orioles and Cardinals.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Royals designated Neal Musser for assignment. Musser, a left-handed reliever, made one relief appearance for the Royals last season. He is 0-1 with a 4.21 ERA in 18 career relief appearances.
