CHICAGO, Ill. – Chicago is a long way from Olathe, but news that the Kansas City Chiefs released Larry Johnson reached Andy Phelan fast. Phelan was online this afternoon when the news broke. Within minutes, his email box was full.
Phelan is one of three Olathe natives who
started an online petition drive calling on Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli to cut Johnson. Dan Cataldi and Joe Pinsky also contributed. Since its launch a week ago, the site collected more than 32,000 signatures and comments.
When reached tonight in Chicago, Phelan said he’d like to think the fans played a role in Johnson’s departure.
“There are 32,000 fans out there that signed something for a reason," Andy Phelan said. “We really, really, really care about our organization and our team. Personally, I feel the Chiefs right now are continuing to make moves to improve and to build the organization. I think the decision made today was very indicative of that.”L-J was only 75 yards shy of becoming the Chiefs’ all-time leading rusher. Following his recent Twitter posts and pasts legal battles, these fans said they did not want his name on that record.
