Imagine getting from St. Louis to Chicago in just about two hours on the ground.

Supporters unveiled an ambitious, $12 billion plan for "ultra-fast" train service between the two cities.

The trains would travel up to 220 mph. That's more than 100 mph faster than trains under a plan backed by eight Midwestern governors.

But skeptics say the idea is too costly. The head of the Illinois Policy Institute, John Tillman, questions whether any benefits of high speed train service would justify the cost.

Tillman is also not convinced electric trains would be more environmentally friendly since they'd rely on energy produced by coal-burning plants.

The high speed train idea is part of a new study from the Midwest High Speed Rail Association.
