KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three homes were damaged and a woman suffered minor injuries Sunday night after a fire broke out at a Kansas City apartment complex.
Joe Vitale, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department, said the two-alarm fire broke out around 6:45 p.m. Sunday in a two-story building that houses eight apartments. The building is located on Chestnut Circle near 87th Street and Holmes.
Vitale said a discarded cigarette that got caught between a second-story deck and the building itself is to blame.
The fire spread up the deck and got into the building's attice. The fire was contained to one unit. A second unit suffered smoke damage while a third unit suffered water damage. The residents are staying in other apartment units so Red Cross services were not needed.
A woman was treated at the scene after she cut herself while trying to break out a fire extinguisher. Vitale said $50,000 in damage occurred to the building and $20,000 in contents.
