JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Two hikers are safe after being rescued by Missouri State Parks employees.

The two hikers, 17 and 19-year-old females, set out to hike the Pike Run Trail late in the afternoon Tuesday in the St. Francois State Park near Bonne Terre. The pair was still on the trail at nightfall.

The hikers climbed a nearby ridge and called 911 for help shortly after 5 p.m. By 8 p.m. the two women were back safe.

Lost hikers are not unusual in Missouri. Park staff says they have to locate hikers on average 3 times each year.

The 2,700 acre St. Francois State Park is a popular hiking destination in Southeast Missouri.
