PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Gov. Ed Rendell says a new proposal has been sent to the union in an effort to end the strike by Philadelphia transit workers now entering its fourth day.

Rendell told reporters early Friday that the union is reviewing a proposal sent to them overnight by the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. The governor has been brokering negotiations between the agency and the Transport Workers Union Local 234, which represents about 5,000 bus drivers, subway and trolley operators and mechanics.

Rendell says he hopes there will be an agreement that will have trains and buses running by Friday night.

Representatives of SEPTA and the union did not immediately return calls seeking comment Friday morning.

Union members walked off the job early Tuesday following a dispute over pension benefits.
