KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The winter blast forced road crews to leave their families behind this Christmas and hit the streets.

Some MoDOT workers were called in at 7 a.m. Thursday. Others were called in to work at 7 p.m.

Stephen Butler and Corey Hansen both had plans to spend Christmas with their families in Iowa. But last minute were asked to cancel.

"I was down, it will be my first Christmas away from home with my son," said Butler who has a 3-year-old son.

But even though Butler and Hansen were upset they couldn't spend time with their family, they knew they had a job to do.

"I guess someone has to since we are out there (we can) make sure others get to their Christmas safe," said Corey Hansen.

MoDOT workers say the quick change from rain to salt to snow made their job especially difficult.
