KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Flu season is here and it's the time to consider getting a seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control says each flu vaccine contains three influenza viruses.

The viruses in the vaccine change each year based on international surveillance and scientists' predictions about which strains will circulate in a given year.

Maxim Health Systems is offering seasonal flu shots at area Target and Costco stores in September, October and November 2009.

The University of Kansas Hospital will offer free flu shots during its 15th annual Drive-Thru Flu Shot event for people 18 and over from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009. This years event will be at a new location on campus, in the parking lot just east of 36th and Rainbow Boulevard in Kansas City, Kan.   No appointment is necessary.  The shots are free, but the hospital will accept donations and non-perishable food items for Harvesters, the Community Food Network, at the Drive-Thru event.

The American Red Cross was offering flu shots at locations throughout the metro area in October and November.  On Nov. 2, the Red Cross issued a statement postponing all of the clinics because of a delay in receiving the vaccine from a manufacturer.  They had ordered 8,000 doses, and expect to eventually receive them all.

If you have any questions about swine flu, Missouri health officials have started a hotline number to provide answers. It will be staffed 24 hours a day. Just call 1-877-FLU-4141.

Some flu shot clinics have been canceled due to limited availability of the vaccine.

Cass County, Mo. - Updated 11-6-09

Cass County, Mo., officials say they no longer have the seasonal flu shot for adults.

They are scheduling H1N1 Clinics as vaccine becomes available.  They will be held at the Cass County Health Department, 300 South Main Street in Harrisonville, Mo.

These two H1N1 clinics have been scheduled:

Friday November 13, 2009 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm

Monday November 30, 2009 from 4:00pm – 7:00pm

The vaccine will be administered on a first-come, first served basis.

The vaccine will be provided to the following priority groups:

• Pregnant Women
• Children six months through twenty-four years of age
• Caregivers of infants less than six months of age
• Healthcare workers and emergency medical services personnel
• People aged 25 – 64 years of age with chronic health conditions

The nasal spray vaccine, Flu Mist, will be administered to healthy individuals (who are not pregnant and age appropriate, age 2 through 49) who meet one of the priority groups specified above.

Pregnant women, children six months of age, and people aged 25 – 64 years of age with chronic health conditions are not eligible for the nasal spray vaccine and will receive an injectable dose.

The Clay County Health Department says they are planning school-based clinics in each school district in Clay County in order to vaccinate as many children ages 5-18 as possible. Clinics are restricted to the children of each district. Letters will be sent to the parents through the schools announcing the upcoming dates of H1N1 flu clinics to be held during the month of November.

In December, they also plan to hold large public clinics on Tuesdays to assure that all of those who are identified in the CDC priority groups can be immunized against H1N1 flu. Our plan is to make the vaccine available to anyone after the priority groups have been vaccinated.

All clinic schedules will be dependent on the availability of vaccine.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department has scheduled public H1N1 vaccination clinics on Monday, Nov. 23 from 2-7 p.m., and Wednesday, Nov. 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while supplies last. The clinics will be in the Health Department Atrium, 2400 Troost Ave. Vaccines are free and are for members of the expanded priority groups only.

“We are using a fast-track registration system for those getting H1N1 vaccinations, resulting in very short wait times,” said Dr. Rex Archer, director of the Health Department. ”However, some residents still do not know where to get vaccinated. Those that cannot attend our clinics should check with their doctors’ offices or local clinics about vaccination availability.”

Vaccines will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last for the following expanded priority groups:
Pregnant women
Children and young adults from 6 months through 24 years old
Adults 25 to 64 years old with significant chronic health conditions

Health care workers with identification

Unfortunately, those 65 years old and older are not yet eligible for H1N1 vaccinations according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Unlike regular seasonal influenza, those over 65 have been less likely to become infected with H1N1.
More than 64,000 doses of vaccine have already been distributed to medical providers in Kansas City, Mo. These providers have agreed to use these doses for people in the priority groups. Another 1400 people have been vaccinated in clinics at the Health Department.
