KANSAS CITY, Mo. - It's been a year in the making and Friday, July 3, Sen. Kit Bond helped cut the ribbon for wetland restoration project on the Riverfront Heritage Trail.

The $1.3 million ecosystem was a joint effort between the Army Corps of Engineers and the Port Authority of Kansas City.

Port Authority Trey Runnion says the project "is much like a garden. The second phase is just waiting for it to grow."

The first phase lasted a year and consisted of clearing out land and planting of Missouri native vegetation.

The wetland project will have trees, shrubs and grasses all from Missouri. An aquifer well will provide water for the wetlands. There will also be walkways, trails and benches along the Heritage Trail.

The ecosystem is financed through funding secured by Bond.
