KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The government program that ensures low income mothers can provide nutritious foods for their children expanded Thursday.

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program added a greater variety of foods.

For the first time participants will be able to obtain fresh, frozen or canned fruits and vegetables.

Other additions include whole grains, whole breads and tortillas and canned beans.

The WIC program previously limited purchases to milk, cheese, eggs, juice, peanut butter, cereals and dried beans.

WIC is a federal program that provides food vouchers for women who are pregnant or recently pregnant and for children up to the age of five.

The Missouri and Kansas WIC agencies have more information on the food changes and how to apply for assistance.
