OLATHE, Kan. - Firefighters in Olathe, Kan. say an automatic fire sprinkler system stopped a fire in an apartment complex Monday morning.

The fire started just before 11 a.m. inside a unit at the Homestead Apartments near 119th and Black Bob. When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the kitchen of the unit. It took only a few minutes for them to extinguish the flames.

Investigators say an unattended stove sparked the flames and heavy smoke that filled the unit. Damage is estimated at $10,000. No one was home when the fire started, and no one was hurt.

The Olathe Fire Department says most kitchen fires are caused by unattended cooking. Firefighters remind everyone to stay in the kitchen when cooking, keep anything that can burn away from appliances, and make sure all appliances are turned off after cooking.
