JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Harry Truman may once again be a fixture in the United States Capitol.
Governor Jay Nixon has submitted a request to put a statue of the Missouri-born former U.S. president in the United States Capitol. Each state gets two statues of deceased residents in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.
Currently, Francis Preston Blair and Thomas Hart Benton are representing the Show-Me state in Washington D.C. Benton served as a U.S. Senator from 1821 to 1851. Blair served in Congress and was a major general in the U.S. army during the Civil War.
The Missouri legislature approved a resolution to replace Blair's statue with one of Truman. Truman served as president from 1945 until 1953 and is from Independence.
A replacement statue of President Truman will be funded privately.
