KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Fewer people are dying on Missouri roads and highways so far this year. In fact, the state could post its lowest number of traffic deaths in several decades.
According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, 382 people died in the first half of the year. That's 15 percent lower than the previous year, which was the lowest since 1993.
The patrol credits better enforcement, safer roads, safer vehicles and more careful drivers for helping to reduce the number of traffic deaths.
If the current trend for the year holds, Missouri's traffic death numbers could rival those from the 1940's or 50's when there were fewer vehicles on the road.
