JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Tour of Missouri was an economic success for the state! An estimated a half-million people watched the weeklong cycling race and spent more than $38 million.
The study, prepared by IMF Sports, was presented to the State Tourism Commission Thursday by Republican Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder. Kinder has been a very vocal supporter of the bicycle race. Democratic Governor Jay Nixon almost withheld funding for this year’s race because of Missouri’s tight budget. The race cost the state $1.5 million.
According to the study, spectators from outside Missouri spent $20.6 million. Those closest to the race course spent $5.6 million, and Missourians who live farther from the race spent $11.9 million.
The state’s three-year sponsorship contract ended with this year’s race.
