LEXINGTON, Mo. – Sheriff’s officers are investigating a report that a man, posing as an electric utility company employee, gained access to a home, and several personal possessions were later found missing.

The home burglary occurred Tuesday south of Mayview. A homeowner tells police that a man, described as about 5’6” tall, weighing 155 to 165 pounds, with short brown hair, beard and baseball cap, came to his home saying he works for the power company and needs to inspect their wiring.

The homeowner took the suspect to the basement where he looked at the wiring for several minutes, acting as if he was checking the wiring. The suspect then told the victim he would be right back, and left. The homeowner and his wife went back upstairs to find that the suspect and his white Ford pick-up truck were gone, as well as property stolen from their home.

It’s believed that the suspect had an accomplice who stole items from the house while the others were in the basement looking at the wiring.

The Sheriff’s Department reminds citizens that utility workers drive vehicles and wear uniforms that are clearly marked. Utility companies rarely, if ever, need access to your home.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to call the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department at (660) 259-3622.
