KANSAS CITY, Mo. - As consumers rush to get flu shots to avoid getting sick, there is another weapon in the fight against flu.

Dr. Joseph Kanerek, a pediatrician at St. Joseph Hospital, says at the first sign of cold or flu symptoms, consumers should take action immediately to minimize those symptoms and make a quick recovery.

The prescription antiviral, Tamiflu, is the key to minimizing symptoms for seasonal and Swine flu.

If consumers take Tamiflu within 24 to 48 hours of experiencing symptoms like a fever, cough or body aches associated with colds and flu, the drug is extremely effective in minimizing symptoms and restoring the person back to health.

Tamiflu is a prescription-only drug.  Contact or visit your physician to get a prescription of Tamiflu within the 24 to 48 hour window of maximum effectiveness.

NBC Action News is examining the availability and use of Tamiflu in the fight against seasonal and swine flu.  Stay with NBC Action News and NBCActionNews.com for updates to this developing story.
