BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - Police evacuated a Blue Springs elementary school Monday morning as they investigated a suspicious package on a nearby roof.
A crew doing construction work at Valley View High School discovered a package with wiring hanging out.
They spotted it at about eight this morning.
The package was on the roof of the building which serves as an alternative high school in Blue Springs.
There are no classes going on there this summer.
As precaution school district officials did evacuate 250 students John Nowlin Elementary school which is right next door.
The bomb squad from the Independence Police Department was called to investigate
Independence police took the device for further examination.
"We're going to work it as a criminal investigation until we determine that it wasn't a device at all. Even if somebody is wrapping that and make it look like a device we want to know about it. If it's construction trash and we figure that out then obviously there's nothing criminal and we just took a bunch of precaution to keep the kids safe today,” says Jeremy Dickstein with the Blue Springs Police Department.
A school district spokeswoman says the elementary students were back in the classroom by early afternoon.
