ANDOVER, Kan. – The days of a free ride to school are coming to an end in many districts.

Budget cuts are forcing some school districts to start charging families for the ride to and from school.

The Andover, Kan. school board has approved charging $100 per student or $150 for multiple children who live within two and a half miles of their school.

"The board absolutely hated to make this decision. just like they've had to make a lot of other cutting decisions," said Mark Evans, Andover Schools Superintendent.

The bus fee is already in place in the metro.

In Olathe, Kan. the price starts at $254 a year, but is less if families pay early.

In the Shawnee Mission, Kan. school district, the fee to ride a school bus depends on age and distance, but prices generally run between $140 and $200.

In Blue Valley, Mo. families could pay up to $360 for bus ride to and from school.
