LEAWOOD, Kan. – Four Johnson County cities are teaming up to sponsor a recycling event this weekend.  No paper or aluminum cans here.  We’re talking old televisions, computers, printers, scanners and more.

Americans dispose of a lot of used electronic devices.  In 2006, Americans threw out almost three million tons of old electronics.  That’s about 6 billion pounds.

Electronic items often contain hazardous or toxic substances that can leach out into the environment when disposed of improperly.  Unwanted electronics also contain materials of high value such as gold, copper, and silver which is wasted when the item is thrown into the trash.

This weekend, the cities of Overland Park, Mission Hills, Leawood, and Prairie Village will sponsor another electronics recycling event where you can easily recycle electronics you no longer use.

The event takes place Saturday, November 14th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm in the parking lot of The Church of the Resurrection on 135th Street between Nall and Roe.

There will be a nominal fee charged between $10 to $25 to recycle computer monitors, televisions and large printers.
