KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Budget cuts might force the Turner School District to shut down one of its elementary schools.

The school board will hold a public meeting Tuesday night to discuss the possibility of closing Morris Elementary School at the end of the 2008-2009 school year.

According to the district’s Web site, a budget shortfall is to blame.

Officials said they considered other options, including cutting staff, reducing health insurance contributions and reducing bussing before focusing on closing Morris Elementary.

According to a district statement, Morris was selected because of declining enrollment and smaller than average class sizes.

If Morris Elementary is closed, students would be transferred to either Oak Grove Elementary or Turner Elementary.

Teachers and other staff members would be moved to other schools, though the district does anticipate some jobs would be cut.

Officials estimated the district would save $450,000 per year by closing Morris Elementary.

Tuesday’s public meeting will be held during the school board meeting that begins at 6:30 p.m.

It will take place in the auditorium of Turner Middle School, 1312 S. 55th Street, Kansas City, Kan.
