KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Residents of the Kansas City area gathered Saturday for the anti-tax Independence Day rally to protest high taxes and increased government spending.
Approximately 1,000 people turned out for the Taxed Enough Already (TEA) Party rally. They held American flags and signs and shouted "no higher taxes" to people driving by.
It was held Saturday morning at 135th Street and State Line Road. Another rally took place in the afternoon at 47th and Main Street, near the Country Club Plaza.
Demonstrators in the metro and across the nation are speaking out against government overspending. Some in the metro are upset about higher taxes as well as President Obama’s plan for nation-wide healthcare.
“Our government has decided it knows better than the people and the people need to make sure that the government understands they do indeed work for us; that we have opinions that need to be heard,” protestor Jim Moore said.
Organizers say at least 1,300 protests were planned across the nation.
A similar
protest was held on April 15 – Tax Day.
