NORBORNE, Mo. – Crews spent much of the morning Thursday trying to safely remove part of a damaged grain elevator from a gas line in Carroll County.

The Norborne Fire Department said if they had found a leak in the gas line, they would have had to evacuate the entire town, population 800. But offiicals said they had determined there was no danger by about 11 a.m.

The damage in Norborne, about 70 miles east of Kansas City, is blamed on a powerful line of thunderstorms that hit the area early Wednesday evening. Those storms brought down dozens of trees, damaged buildings and knocked out power to many of the town's residents.

A spokeswoman with Kansas City Power & Light said about 400 customers remained without power at 8:10 Thursday morning. More than 50 KCP&L crews were in Norborne to begin efforts to restore power and repair downed power lines.

No injuries were reported.
