KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The economic downturn will take center stage Friday when a new play opens at UMKC.
"Slammed! KC Speaks Out on the Recession" is based on interviews with dozens of Kansas Citians affected by the economy. UMKC Assistant Professor of Physical theater Stephanie Roberts created and directed the show. She and her team interviewed economists, artists, police officers, business owners, massage therapists, waiters, former millionaires and more.
"Our job as theatre artists is to tell stories," says Roberts. "Sometimes we inform, sometimes we entertain, sometimes we act as Vox Populi - the voice of the people..." she added.
The production shows how our community reacts to a crisis, from humor and anger to tears and prayer.
Donations will be accepted at each performance to benefit the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools Office of the Homeless Liaison, Neighbor 2 Neighbor and Hope House. The following items are needed: socks, deodorant, new or used winter clothing, gently used clothing for women and children and socks and underwear for pre-school to high school students.
