OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Overland Park police dispatched two squads on July Fourth specifically designed to crack down on fireworks.
It is illegal to sell, possess or shoot off fireworks in Overland Park. Police responded to 57 fireworks related calls on July 3.
"It's for the safety of our residents and the protection of the property," said Officer Jim Weaver of the Overland Park Police.
Two teams of police officers fanned out through the city to enforce Overland Park's ban on fireworks.
Officer Bill Koehn is part of the team.
"I've heard a lot of excuses in the past...the traditional I didn't know it was illegal is classic," he said.
Violators face a fine of between $200 to $500 dollars if caught.
