OLATHE, Kan. – The best of the best spellers will converge in Washington D.C. Wednesday for the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.
More than 290 students will be taking part this year.
Among them is Olathe's own Kavya Shivashankar. This is her fourth trip to the Scripps Spelling Bee.
Shivashankar has finished in the top 10 in her past three appearances. She said that has helped her prepare to win this year's competition.
"In the last few years, the words have become more challenging then if I watch spelling bees from 2000, 2001 the words are easier than what they are giving in the finals now,” Shivashankar said.
Last year, a boy from Indiana took the crown.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee is sponsored by the E.W. Scripps Company, the owner of NBC Action News.
