Last Update: 6/06 1:15 pm
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Overwhelming! That's how National Spelling Bee champion Kavya Shivashankar describes her life since winning the national bee.

The 13-year-old flew back to Kansas City Friday afternoon after several days on the national media circuit.

The Olathe teen won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 28.

Since then, Kavya has appeared on several shows including the Today Show and Jimmy Kimmel.

Friday, friends surprised her with a welcome home block party.

"It's taught me discipline and hard work and so many other skills I can carry on. I am hoping other people may get inspired to follow their passions and do what they want to do,” Kavya said.

This fall, Kavya will be a ninth grader at California Trail Junior High School.
