TONGANOXIE, Kan. - A sixth grade boy has been suspended for ten days after bringing a homemade explosive device to the city's Middle School Thursday.

Police sources told NBC Action News, the boy had emptied the powder of two M-80’s into a cardboard wrapper that package BB’s.

He also put some BB’s in the wrapper and put in a fuse.

He approached another student wanting to sell the device to him, who then reported it to the principal.

City police and fire were notified as well as the Leavenworth county bomb squad.  The bomb squad took the device out of the school to a rock quarry and detonated it.

The device was equivalent to 1/3 stick of dynamite.

"We do not believe there was malicious intent," said Kyle Hayden, the Tonganoxie Assistant Superintendent.  "We believe he had a serious error in judgement," Hayden said.

An expulsion hearing will follow the ten day suspension.
