ADRIAN, Mo. – A man who was fatally shot during a standoff with police on Wednesday was a fugitive for more than two decades.

In a written statement, the Bates County Sheriff’s Department says they were investigating information that a man living in northern Bates County was wanted for several felony counts in other states. The man was living in Bates County under the alias of Hugh Brown. Fingerprints taken from Brown revealed his true identity as Douglas Miller.

Miller was wanted in Pasco County, Florida for burglary, attempted murder, aggravated batter, aggravated assault and grand theft. He was also wanted in Cook County, Illinois for attempted murder and an offense with a weapon.

The Florida charges had been filed in 1983.

On Tuesday, the Bates County Sheriff’s Department received word from the State of Florida that they would extradite Miller to stand trial for the charges from approximately 25 years ago. Miller was located in a residence he shared with Niki Lynn on County Road 4501. When police executed a search warrant there on Wednesday, Miller began to shoot at officers.

Officers returned fire and struck Miller several times. He then barricaded himself inside a room in the back of the house. During the exchange of gunfire, a Missouri Highway Patrol Trooper was hit but his bulletproof vest protected him from serious injury.

After a standoff which lasted several hours, officers used a pole mirror and located a body inside the house. The body was that of Douglas Miller, also known as Hugh Brown. A written statement from the Bates County Sheriff’s Department states the cause of death was suicide by a self-inflicted gunshot.
