PLATTE CITY, Mo. -- The first taste of winter weather reminds us the real deal is around the corner.

We spent most of the day around Platte City. The Missouri Highway Patrol responded to a handful of slide-off accidents but no major injures were reported in any accident. A few flights trying to take off at KCI were briefly delayed. We met a family in a small town north of Platte City that knows the weather is only going to get worse.

In Tracy, Mo., winter can’t come too early. But it seems the Simmons’ caught a case of procrastination. They are racing the cold weather trying to stack up enough firewood for the winter.

“We were like, whoa, we have to get ready,” said Brandon Simmons.

The Missouri Department of Transportation prepared as well. It has 195 trucks and a pile of 45,000 tons of salt ready to spread when the first snow falls. Overall, drivers maneuvered through the wet streets just fine.

“My brother called and said get down here. I came outside and said, burr!” chattered Gary Simmons.

The Simmons family spent the day hacking away at the wood. They hoped to stack enough before the first snow considerable snow storm. And while they missed the first flurries, they have a little breathing room. Like the rest of the people living in the metro, they know the real winter blast is yet to come.
