KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Liberty Memorial in Kansas City is one step closer to being designated as the National World War I Memorial, and hosting a World War I Centennial Commemoration Commission.

That's the word Wednesday from Congressman Emanuel Cleaver. The announcement coincides with Veterans Day activities at the Liberty Memorial. Rep. Cleaver says the House voted 418-1 in support of the designation. The bill now moves onto the Senate where Sen. Kit Bond and Sen. Claire McCaskill will push for its passage.

"I appreciate the hard work of Congressman Cleaver and his Missouri and Kansas colleagues in the House who convinced their counterparts across the nation that Kansas City should be forever designated the home of the National World War I Memorial," said National World War I Museum President & CEO Brian Alexander.

Rep. Cleaver says the designation is merely a continuation of his efforts as Mayor of Kansas City.

"There are those who may have forgotten the Great War, but none of them live here. We have always been the home of the National World War I Memorial. This bill merely makes it official."
