EASTON, Kan. – A Leavenworth man drowned Monday in a private lake owned by his father-in-law.

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office says Danny L. Schlickelman, 58, was trying to remove a blockage in an overflow drain in the lake in the 21000 block of Easton Road around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

Family members called 911 when he did not surface after a few minutes.

Emergency crews say Schlickelman became stuck in the drain by the suction created by the water in the drain and first responders used a boat to pull him out of the water with rope.

Schlickelman was taken to a Leavenworth hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His death was ruled an accidental drowning by the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Department.
