LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Mo. – The mother of Chance Ellis-Smith, the 7-year-old Lafayette County boy who was reported missing Friday, returned the boy to his father early Saturday morning.

Authorities report the mother, Kim Ellis, 42, returned custody of the boy to his father, Terry Smith, shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday. Smith then called the Lexington Police Department, who responded to the residence and arrested the non-custodial mother on a county warrant.

Police say the boy is safe.

The incident remains under investigation.
