KU Graduate Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver

MERRIAM, Kan. – A 25-year-old Shawnee, Kan., man has been charged in the death of a KU grad student.

Police say Steven Kyle Cummins struck and killed a 23-year-old graduate student at the University of Kansas early Saturday morning.

It happened at around 3 a.m. on Shawnee Mission Parkway over Interstate 35.

According to police, two men, who had car trouble, were pushing the car down the roadway when they were struck from behind by Cummins’ Dodge Dakota truck.

Steven Kyle Cummins was charged Feb. 8, 2009 with a felony count of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The 23-year-old KU graduate from France was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man from that car was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The victim’s name was being withheld because his family had not yet been notified.

Cummins was taken into custody for suspicion of drunk driving. Johnson County prosecutors charged Cummins with a felony count of involuntary manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. His bond was set at $250,000.
