LAWRENCE, Kan. - KU athletic director Lew Perkins has ordered an internal investigation involving head football coach Mark Mangino.
As I first told you, parents of some of the players had requested a meeting with Perkins because Mangino had verbally abused them.
The football team is in the midst of a five-game losing streak.
The players met with Perkins Monday night and Mangino had a private meeting Tuesday morning for about 10 to 15 minutes with the athletic director.
"I can confirm an internal review is under way. It involves a personnel matter, and as a result, is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information right now," Perkins said in a news release.
At Tuesday’s news conference, Mangino was asked if he had lost his players.
He replied, "I haven't lost the team, not one bit. I may have lost some people around here but it's not players.”
At least five players have filed complaints against Mangino and one of them, linebacker Arist Wright from Houston, said that he had been struck in a physical manner by Mangino. Other players include Angus Quigley, Maxwell Onyegbule, Darius Parish and Dakota Lewis.
One source said that some of the players were so upset, that they had requested that Clint Bowen, the team’s defensive coordinator, take over for Mangino immediately.
