KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A woman said a fuse blew in her kitchen Monday night, sparking a fire that destroyed her home.

Stephanie Seward said she was cooking dinner and talking on the phone when she heard a loud “popping noise.” She looked up and saw the wall engulfed in flames near the breaker box.

She called the fire department and ran outside. By the time she reached her front porch, Seward said flames had already spread to the living room.

“By the time the fire department got here, it was gone. It was that quick,” she said.

Seward said she had two years left on the mortgage before owning the home outright. She told NBC Action News she could not afford insurance.

Luckily, her dog Spot emerged unscathed. At one point, Seward said he ran back into the burning house to retrieve a bone he had buried under a couch cushion.

Firefighters also retrieved Seward’s charred, frozen purse. However, the rest of her possessions were lost in the fire.

The Red Cross is making sure she has a place to stay. The Kansas City Fire Department is still investigating the exact cause of the fire.
