KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Parents in the Kansas City School District had a chance to sound off Tuesday night, on a plan to close 12 schools in the metro.
Under the school district's proposed plan, nine elementary and two middle schools will close. One alternative school is also on the chopping block.
Concerned parents and teachers packed the school board meeting opposed to the school closings. However, the largest amount of opposition came from McCoy Elementary School parents and students, who believe McCoy’s attendance and performance record should be reason enough to keep it open.
Anne Pritchett has taught at McCoy elementary for the past 12 years.
"Instead of closing McCoy you should be cloning it. In 2001, McCoy was the Missouri gold star school," said Pritchett.
The school slated to close are; Thatcher 8th Grade Center, Westport Middle, Moore Elementary, Bryant Elementary, Graceland Elementary, Chick Elementary, Blenheim Elementary, Pershing Elementary, Langon Elementary, McCoy Elementary, Cook Elementary, and Meservey Alternative School.
The interim superintendent fielded questions at Tuesday night's meeting. He reminded the crowd that the plan has not been finalized by the school board.
