KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Nine people are murdered in Kansas City, Kan., in the past nine days.
Family tells us the latest victim is 15-year-old Edgar Carmona. He was
shot to death in the 400 block of North 10th Street.
On Friday, a bullet from a drive by
shooting struck 7-year-old Laraya Wilson.
Last Monday, 3-year-old Juanita Castleberry-Bess died in a quadruple homicide.
They are just three of the nine homicide victim's of the past week.
“I don't believe we would consider it to be a murder wave,” says Deputy Police Chief Rick Armstrong.
The total homicdes for this year is 21. That is compared to 14 homicides at this time last year and 15 homicides at this point in 2007.
Armstrong calls the violence of the past nine days an anomaly.
"My experience in law enforcement is that hot weather tends to... we see crime increase. People are outside. People are irritable. The stress that comes with that,” he says.
The deputy chief points out that the success rate of solving homicides was 90 percent up until this past week.
He says they've solved three of the most recent cases.
