KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Aviation Department says the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded KCI a $9.3 million grant that is funded under the federal stimulus act.

The money will go towards enhancing the closed circut television system at K.C.I., which will provide enhanced surveillance capabilities throughout the airport.

The aviation department previously received a $7 million grant under the stimulus act for runway and taxiway repairs.

"The city of Kansas City, Mo., is committed to continuously improving the safety and security of Kansas City International Airport," said Mark Vanloh, Director of Aviation.  "These state-of-the-art technologies will bolster security for Kansas City travelers and put Kansas Citians to work."

Also on Thursday, Frontier Airlines announced that they have emerged from bankruptcy and plans to expand operations at KCI.

The new company is a subsidiary of Republic Airways, which also bought Midwest Airlines earlier this summer.

Midwest and Frontier Airlines will employ about 300 at KCI.
