KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Police Department is now offering Women’s Personal Safety Seminars monthly, starting Nov. 14 at the Police Academy, 6885 N.E. Pleasant Valley Road.
The four-hour class focuses on awareness, prevention, streetwise caution and self defense. Kansas City Police Academy instructors and other KCPD officers teach the class, which features hands-on activities and question-and-answer sessions.
Women can register now for either the Nov. 14 or Dec. 12 class. You must be at least 12 years old to participate. The course will run from 8 a.m. to noon on both dates, and the cost is $25.
Preregistration is required
. Police plan to continue offering the class on the second Saturday of every month into 2010.
The course will cover many topics, including: self defense techniques; identity theft prevention; and safety tips for the home, car, purses, shopping, exercising and more. Women from throughout the Kansas City metro area are invited to participate.

Waldo-area safety seminars
Personal safety, home security and safety on the road will be the subjects of two safety seminars being held in the Waldo area, too.
On Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. a certified gun instructor will speak about handguns. The expert will offer information about whether to choose a handgun as your method of self-defense, choosing a gun, training and safety tips when there is a gun in the house.
On Wednesday, October 21st, a Kansas City Police officer has been invited to discuss the department’s residential security surveys, crime prevention, crime trends and any information he can share about the recent rapes in the Waldo area.
Both seminars are free and open to the public. There will be a question and answer session after each program.
Saturday’s seminar is in the Tap Room at Waldo Pizza, on the northeast corner of 74th Street and Wornall Road in Kansas City, Mo.
Wednesday’s seminar is at The Gaff, on the west side of Wornall Road at 71st Street in Kansas City.
