KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Thunderstorms knocked out power to thousands across the metro in recent days, and there were still several hundred KCP&L and BPU customers without electricity Thursday afternoon.

Kansas City Power & Light spokeswoman Katie McDonald says there were still about 400 custmers scattered around the metro with no electricity, down from as many as 12,000 just a few days ago. BPU also reported about 200 outages as of 2:30 Thursday afternoon.

McDonald said more than 10,000 customers in Johnson County, Kan., and Jackson County, Mo., did not have electricity at the height of a storm Wednesday night. That included about 5,000 in Kansas, 3,000 in south Kansas City and 2,000 more in Midtown, the Plaza and Downtown.

McDonald says crews are working 16-hour shifts in hopes of restoring power to everyone. She says they hope to have all power back on by sometime Friday. A BPU representative also said they are working around the clock to restore power to all customers.

Because both companies are experiencing problems, they are not able to borrow crews from each other, which usually helps them fight power outages quicker.
