With another World Series kicking upon us, we wanted to take a look back at the teams involved, and give you a chance to test your knowledge of the teams involved.
The Philadelphia Phillies look to complete their repeat bid against the New York Yankees, who have – perhaps surprisingly to some – not won a World Series since beating the Mets - their cross-town rivals – in 2000.
So break out the baseball encyclopedia stored inside your head and get ready for 10 tough questions about the history of both teams, both in and out of the World Series.
Before you get started, check out a few fun facts about the teams and/or the World Series that didn’t make it into the quiz, but are fun to know anyways!
- This will be the 40th time the Yankees have appeared in the modern World Series. They have won 26 times, the most titles of any professional franchise in any sport. The Phillies have been to only six Fall Classics, winning two of them (1980 and 2008).
- The Phillies are the only team to play each team currently in any one division in the World Series. They have battled all five teams from the American League East.
- Three current franchises (Washington, Seattle and Texas) have never appeared in a World Series. Four others (Houston, Milwaukee, Colorado and Tampa Bay) lost in their only shot at becoming world champions.
- Behind the Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers have appeared in the next-most World Series (18). They have won only 6, dropping 12. The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants rank third with 17 appearances each, with the Cards winning 10 and the Giants 5.
- The Pittsburgh Pirates, with 5 wins and only 2 losses, have the highest World Series winning percentage (.714) of any team with at least 3 appearances.
