KANSAS CITY, Mo. – About 110 court documents were found scattered across a Kansas City street early Thursday morning.
NBC Action News received a tip early Thursday that the documents were strewn on Oak between 16th Street and Truman.
The documents, which came from the Jackson County Circuit Court and the Missouri Criminal Justice Center mainly include defendants' names and charges. But a few included addresses, phone numbers and even social security numbers.
NBC Action News picked the documents up off the ground and put them in a safe place until we were able to reach officials at the court house and turn them over.
Lunch time Thursday, Presiding Judge W. Stephen Nixon released a statement saying,
"The 16th Judicial Circuit Court makes every effort to secure confidential documents. However (Wednesday night) some non-confidential court documents were scattered during a collection stop by the recycle pickup company."
"In light of this occurrence, even though all the documents that were dropped by the pick-up company were public record, we are taking steps to review and if necessary revise policies and practices regarding destruction of records."
"In an effort to prevent future occurrences, recycle pickup service ot the Courthouse has been suspended until the situation is resolved."
