BATES COUNTY, Mo. – A Missouri Highway Patrol trooper was shot in Bates County Tuesday afternoon.

At around 3:30 p.m., Bates County deputies and Missouri Highway Patrol troopers went to a house on County Road 4501 near AA Highway to serve a felony warrant.

Douglas S. Miller, 49, was wanted on a five county felony warrant in Pasco County, Fla., and Cook County, Ill.

When authorities arrived at the house, gunfire was exchanged and one trooper was hit. He was wearing a vest, so he suffered only minor injuries.
Miller may have also been shot. He retreated to a back room.

Officers retreated and set up a perimeter around the house. A SWAT team from Cass County was called in.

They tried to get Miller to surrender for hours. Finally, at around 9:30 p.m. the standoff was over.

Authorities said Miller is dead, but have not said whether he shot himself.
