PAOLA, Kan. – Kansas Democrats are left struggling again to find a candidate willing to square off against Republican U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback in the upcoming gubernatorial race.
In the party’s latest setback, Herbert West of Paolo plans to make his second departure from the race on Monday. West had already dropped out once before re-entering.
The high school dropout lives on Social Security and Medicare. He has largely been ignored by the Democratic Party, but even so, had been the only candidate. He had used his campaign to make a case that the government no longer pays attention to common people like himself.
With an opponent as formidable as Brownback, Democrats are having a hard time finding a nominee. Former pharmaceutical company executive Tom Wiggans had the party’s support, but he dropped out.
The party hopes that Democratic State Sen. Tom Holland of Baldwin City will announce his candidacy soon.
