FORT LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Suspected terrorists could soon be moved to Kansas if President-Elect Barack Obama or the Department of Defense gets their way.
Senator Sam Brownback met with city officials and the police force Thursday vowing to fight the proposal to move some or all of the 250 detainees from Guantanamo Bay to the U.S. Detention Barracks.
Brownback said Fort Leavenworth isn't secure enough to handle the prisoners citing its close proximity to the Missouri River and rail line.
He also said such a movement would violate federal law regarding housing soldiers and enemy prisoners of war in the same proximity.
Because there is no military police in Leavenworth, so it'd be up to local police if there was ever a security breach.
Brownback said, "You make Leavenworth an international terrorist target."
Brownback says he will file legislation as early as next week in the Senate to block moving the detainees to Fort Leavenworth.
