KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Middle school girls, their parents and teachers enjoyed an afternoon of science fun at the Sally Ride Science Festival Sunday.
Named for the astronaut, the festival is designed to encourage girls to explore careers in science. Astronaut Linda Gowin, a Missouri native, was slated to address the event at the UMKC Swinney Recreation Center, 5030 Holmes.
The festival included discovery workshops with hands-on experiments. Workshops were held for parents and teachers to help them encourage girls' interest in science and math.
Time Warner Cable helped host the festival, which hopes to inspire girls to become tomorrow's problem solvers.
