PARK HILL, Mo. – It is part of the curriculum for everyone through high school.

Now, Park Hill School District officials want physical education lessons to stay with students well beyond high school.

Members of the school board approved the plan late Thursday night that changes gym class from participating in group activities to a class that focuses on individualized goals.

Starting in Kindergarten, Phys Ed teachers would assess a student’s health and establish goals and activities to help the student achieve them.

District officials say the move will help children learn how to make certain lifestyle choices and not get discouraged if they don’t excel in a certain activity.

For now, the new policy would last through middle school.

District officials say the idea could be applied to the high school curriculum later down the road.

The proposed overhaul was piloted in several middle school classes.

District officials say the response has been positive.
