OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A large, theft ring has the attention police across the metro.  They believe more than two dozen suspects could be involved.

Ford’s F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks are disappearing from streets and lots in the Kansas City area.

“In the past month or two, we’ve had anywhere from 15 or a little bit more than that stolen,” said Officer Jim Weaver, spokesman for Overland Park Police.

Police in Leawood, Kansas City, Independence, Blue Springs and Overland Park are investigating together.  They said there could be up to 30 people involved.  Their suspects like pick-ups, especially those with trailers parked in public places along I-435 and I-70.

“They need to get job or get them on their own,” said Joe Collins, who drives a Ford F-350.

For Collins, who makes a living with his Super Duty truck, the theft ring is a swelling concern.

“It would kind of suck if somebody took it,” Collins said.

Police hope to bust the theft ring soon.  In the meantime, detectives suggest people concerned about theft purchase an ignition cutoff switch.  They said it can prevent vehicle theft because the device stops gasoline from reaching fuel injectors.  Officers said the switch costs around $80 and is available via the internet and at auto parts stores.

If that is too expensive, police suggest buying a collar to cover the ignition when you park.
