I work in EMS, everything possible should have been done for that boy immediately, including attempts to stop all bleeding, no matter if it looked hopeless, or not. The comment by the cop was just disgusting, I hope one of his is never seriously injured in an accident and treated this way.

My heart goes out to the family. I too have a son and couldn't imagine loosing him. As for the nurse that questions why someone didnt "touch the kid" apperantly you haven't worked in the feild. We are taught that our first assessment is visual. You would know that as a nurse. Obviously someone did touch him because they treated him and took him to the hospital. Someone hit by a car doing 90 mph doesnt have much of a servival chances. Even if the boy had a trauma surgeon on scene who is to say the out come would be any different. There is no excuess for the cops actions. What they did and said was wrong. The EMS crew did what they could do. The person that needs to be blamed is the person who ran from the cops. If he wouldn't have ran none of this would have happend. So many lives wouldn't have been turn up side down. The truth will be known in the end. I dont understand why the EMS crew is getting so much grief. Until you have our trainning and are in that stituation dont jugde.

I agree that there is no excuse for what the Officer said. This family as most families do, look for the police to be helpful at such a time, and not sit and make jokes about their dying child. There is no way that this Officer should be able to carry on with any police department anywhere. He was very unprofessional, and his comment could have been better left unsaid. The man that hit the child has nothing at all to do with such a very ugly comment. This is a comment this family will have to live with for the rest of their lives. That Officer should not be allowed to carry on his duties.I would hope and pray that I nor any member of my family would run into him for any reason. Not to mention that his coworkers should not want him to stand and repesent their department. My prayers go out to this family and I hope and I pray that they can find it in their heart to pray for that Officer that made that comment

I can't get over the comment the police made about the dieng teen. making this kind of a comment and the laughter in the bakground tells us how mentally ill these officers are. the scary part is that it is not just one sicko that claims to serve and protect us but several. all of them deserve to not only loose their job but should be punished as harsch as the law possibly allows. I hope all of America wishes them the worst of luck and may they suffer for the rest of their misserable lifes!

Woody...I am a nurse. I know about comments and trying to cope. But saying "they are like roaches, they just won't die"??? Never heard anything like that in my 20+ years of nursing! No excuse! I also agree with you, ABowman, if EMS was on the scene why didn't someone "touch" this kid??? Again, no excuse! Yes the perp may have run over him but the others allowed him to die! SAD! My prayers are with his family...

I can't imagine the loss this family is experiencing and my prayers are with them. That being said, I have worked in emergency services in the past and sometimes cruel or crude comments are made to simply be able to get through the situation. They probably did imagine that it could have been a family member and the comments made were a way for them to cope. As to the level of care received at the scene I cannot comment because I wasn't there and don't have access to dispatch logs, police reports or ambulance run sheets but those will prove out if there was negelgence on the part of the embergency workers. We should not forget that it was not the officers that decided to break the law and then resisist arrest by fleeing at a high speed. there is only one person who is responsible for this and that is the man that was convicted. I hope that he suffers night mares and can never sleep or live peacfully again.

While this is only one side of the story, it is disturbing that no one even checked this VICTIM. What if this was THEIR child? I'm sure they would be feeling different. I want to know that if I'm in an accident, whether in Olathe or Independence, that I'm going to get the care I need to survive. The lack of professionalism is astounding. I reach out to this family and pray that they receive the closure they need during this period of mourning.
