LAWRENCE, Kan. – Two people are charged after a raid on a rural Douglas County home.
Ezequiel Olivas, 44, is charged with three counts of conducting cockfighting, and one charge of possession of cockfighting paraphernalia.
Jose Guerrero, 40 was also arrested but has not yet been formally charged.
Authorities say after a tip was received by the Humane Society, they spent several months planning the raid, which was conducted early Tuesday morning.
They seized 169 birds, plus other items believed to be used in an illegal cockfighting operation, from a Eudora, Kan., house.
Taken were 118 game cocks, 48 hens and three chicks.
Because of new legislation passed in July 2009, unlawful conduct of cockfighting is now a felony.
